Early on it seemed hard to see young students blogging. After reading A Duck with a Blog, I could visualize my first graders blogging with ease. Parents would enjoy seeing what the students have written. This may help start a dialog between students and family. I know when I ask my daughters what they did in school they almost always say "nothin'". I have to ask if I need to drive them back to school and have them go and ask their teachers what they taught in order for them to give a few short sentences about their day. Parents might become more involved in their students education if they don't have to use threats to find out what they are learning in school. It seems to me when parents are positively involved in their child's education students enjoy school a lot more. They seem to put forth more effort.
When parents or others respond positively to blogs it encourages even struggling students to improve. In the beginning of the next school year I will definitely encourage the parents of my students to take the time to positively respond to our class blog.
I sure am glad that took this class in the summer so that I can start the year off with a bang.

The Duck blog definitely gives you a different perspective on how even the young ones are able to do such cool things with computers. In fact, they sometimes understand it better than us or better than me. Ha! I can't wait to get together and plan for the next year using some of these computer activities in our instruction.
ReplyDeleteI'd never imagine that a first grader would get the concept of blogging but I spent the weekend with my three year old granddaughter and she picked up my iphone and was able to navigate around to find the applications that she was interested in and when the phoone rang was able to answer it. Welcome to the 21st century and young minds who aren't afraid to charter new couses.
ReplyDeleteEven if your students didn't participate on the blog I'm sure the parents would love the communication about your class!
ReplyDeleteI also can't wait to incorporate my blog into my communication with my students' parents. How great that we will feel so comfortable doing so after completing this class.
